Andrea Spiteri confirmed as captain for season 2017/18

Wednesday, 27 September 2017 00:02 AM
Mdina Knights FC proudly announces Andrea Spiteri as club captain for season 2017/18.

In his third season at Mdina since hanging up his boots, 29-year-old Andrea tells MdinaKnightsFC.com he is excited about the club’s 2017/18 campaign, and already credits head coach Renzo Kerr-Cumbo for his work with the team thus far this season.

“The squad is both young and new. Only a few players remain from last season. Renzo has worked a lot throughout the first months to give us a purpose and a plan that we need to follow during the game”.

“Our success this year will be directly proportionate to how much we will be able to stick to the plan, gel together and collectively improve our game”.

After playing at a myriad of Maltese clubs including Naxxar and Lija Athletic, the Floriana nursery product says the Mdina Knights continue to impress him.

“As always, the club impresses me year after year with the seriousness and dedication towards Mdina Knights FC. In my humble opinion, we have the setup of higher division clubs and in our modesty, we do things the right way”.

“Like every season, we are always considered as underdogs with the big clubs always spending so much on bringing in experience from higher divisions. Being able to give those big clubs a good run for their money and actually beating these teams on the pitch is quite exciting”.

The left defender, who scored from a spectacular free kick in last weekend’s 3-0 victory over Xghajra, admits captaincy wasn’t on his mind until a chat with Head Coach Renzo Kerr-Cumbo.

“It was unexpected really. I was thinking about the old leaders we’ve had like Gilbert and Kurt, and when Renzo asked me what I think about the team, I addressed my concern”.

“He told me ‘you’re not getting any younger… it’s about time you step up’, which was totally right for him to say. I just needed someone to point it out”.

“I don’t believe I’m captain material yet, but I swear I do my best every day to improve and learn. I feel lucky that I have the support from the coach, the team and also Neil and the committee, which makes it easier to believe in myself and step up”.

Mdina Knights FC face Mellieha this Sunday 1st October at Charles Abela Stadium, Mosta in match day three of the MFA 3rd Division League.
